Emilio Gabbrielli has a degree in Chemical Engineering and a Post-Degree Certificate in simulation and optimisation from the Bologna University, Italy. He has more than 40 years’ experience in water globally. His main areas of expertise are desalination and reuse. He started with solar desalination in Peru in 1974, then got involved with all aspects of dual purpose plants in the Middle East and North Africa, based on Weir MSF technology. He started his involvement with membrane technology in 1981, when he moved to Australia with Italimpianti. As General Manager of Permutit in Sydney in the late 80s/early 90s, he lead the design and construction of the zero-discharge water schemes for the coal fired power stations of Bayswater and Mount Piper in NSW. Later he also gained experience in water utilities, mainly in Indonesia, Spain and the Americas, as a director of Thames Water International. Between 2003 and 2008 he served as CEO of the Global Water Partnership (GWP), the sister network of the World Water Council (WWC), which pursues policies of sustainable development and management of water resources. Emilio is Director, Overseas Business Development, of Toray. He is serving as President of the International Desalination Association (IDA) for the 2015-2017 term. He is an honorary Global Ambassador of the Australian Water Association (AWA).
