Greening the Islands and CPRM Islands Commission in collaboration with European Committee of the Regions is organising a meeting to discuss the synergy between island governments and the private sector. The event will be held in Brussels on 18thJune 2019.

The European Union has entered a critical stage for the achievement of its energy and climate targets. According to the governance of the Energy Union and climate action rules, Member States are required to establish 10-year integrated National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) and submit them to the European Commission by 31 December 2019. Each country is also required to develop a national long-term strategy by 1 January 2020 and ensure it is consistent with its NECP.

In this context, representatives of island regions and local governments in collaboration with the member industries of Greening the Islands will gather on June 18 in Brussels with the technical and political support of the Committee of the Regions (CoR).

The meeting will discuss the national plans & strategies and on role that island governments and the private sector should play both in their design and implementation. It will also allow participants to exchange with new elected representatives of the European Parliament as well as with members of the Committee of the Regions about upcoming political steps in the fields of the energy transition and the decarbonisation of EU islands.
