A new GTI Observatory structure to better deepen the most innovative topics on island circular economy

First task forces on storage, solar-desalination and sustainable tourism for island resorts among others

To coordinate the growing number of GTI Observatory activities and enhance the involvement of all stakeholders committed to island circular economy, we have structured a workflow to create focus on the most innovative topics for the self-sufficiency and sustainability of islands. Among the task forces that have already started:

  • Floating offshore wind power. Focus on Mediterranean – in cooperation with Wind Europe
  • Eu regulatory framework on batteries and their contribution to islands decarbonisation – in cooperation with Eurobat  (Association of European Automotive and Industrial Battery Manufacturers) and EASE (The European Association for storage of energy)
  • Solar energy, water recycling & desalination hybrid systems – in cooperation with IDA (International Desalination Association) and Global Solar Council
  • Sustainable Agriculture in Small Islands – in cooperation with Insuleur (the Association of the EU Islands Chambers of Commerce)
  • The island resorts: how to become a green destination and reduce costs, while engaging local communities. The Maldives’ case study – in cooperation with MITDC (Maldives Integrated Tourism Destination Corporation)

A webinar has been organised on 27th July 2020 to present the new structure and relied on the intervention of the following speakers:

Island institutions, companies and associations, academia, international institutions, innovative solution providers, industry associations and other stakeholders from the globe committed to the circular economy of islands will have the opportunity to take part in on-line meetings, reports, workshops, webinars, etc. to originate projects for the self-sufficiency and sustainability of islands.
