GTI statement in relation to the draft text of the cover decisions of COP27 on Nov. 18 – 9am EET

The draft text of the cover decisions of COP 27, as of November 18 at 9 am EET, makes no mention of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

SIDS, and islands in general, are disproportionally affected by the effects of climate change and have already suffered damage to their biodiversity, environment, infrastructure, and more.

GTI welcomes the mention of the need for increased funding for loss and damage but recommends funding instruments related to loss and damage be directed with priority to SIDS as they are the most vulnerable and most in need of financial aid.

SIDS, and islands in general, urgently need investments to become more resilient and self-sufficient, including becoming less dependent on the import of water and fossil fuels.

This is an opportunity, as islands are laboratories of innovation. Indeed, loss and damage funding will represent investments for testing sustainable solutions and green technologies that will benefit the mainland as well.

We take processes apart, rethink, rebuild, and deliver them back working smarter than ever before.
