The GTI Observatory’s Global Index is a new way to measure the progress islands
around the world are making towards a greener future.

The index will be produced as part of the GTI Observatory’s work to stimulate and assist islands and remote locations in the design and implementation of their strategic public policies for sustainable development.

The Global Index will provide a single benchmark of best practice and innovative solutions, guiding governments and local populations in formulating and improving policies and other instruments.

The ranking will be produced by the GTI Observatory based on a technical evaluation of information provided by participating municipalities, with criteria measuring the effectiveness of actions performed. A star system will highlight virtuous islands.

The GTI Observatory’s Global Index will be published once a year listing all the participating islands.

The following are some of the topics covered in the questionnaire:

  • Energy

  • Water

  • Mobility

  • Waste

  • Environment

The role of the liaison person

The liaison person and substitute should be formally indicated to represent their island in the GTI Observatory Global Index by the Mayor or legal representative. They are the contacts between Greening the Islands and the island and all those in charge of managing the information to assist in filling out the questionnaire.

Dedication and commitment to the environment is fundamental for success in the sustainable development of islands.

How to take part

Any island wishing can be part of the index by simply filling out an online questionnaire and naming a liaison person (and a substitute).

The Greening the Islands Observatory offers technical training to local government staff through our Online Community – GTI App.
