A new tool to assess and rank the environmental sustainability of islands

News & Blog

The Greening the Islands Observatory Global Index is an innovative new tool to measure and compare the efforts of islands around the world on sustainability through a questionnaire to gather information on the various environmental aspects of island management.

The Index is an initiative of Greening the Islands Observatory (GTIO) designed to stimulate and assist remote islands and locations in defining and implementing policies and solutions for sustainable development. The support is provided through the comparison and collection of best practices.

Energy, environmental education, mobility, waste and water management are all analyzed by the GTIO Global Index.

Through the GTIO Global Index, the Observatory will rank the best performing islands based on a technical assessment of the information provided by island municipalities, with criteria that measure the effectiveness of any actions performed. A rating system assigning “drops” from one to five as an indicator of evaluation will highlight the most virtuous islands. The results of the GTIO Global Index will be published once a year.

Any island can participate in the Index by filling in an application form and the online questionnaire. For any information you can write an email to: observatory@greeningtheislands.net.
